    IN THE STUDIO:
    Rose Elinor Dougall
Following her departure from The Pipettes in 2008, Rose Elinor Dougall has quietly been recasting herself as a psychedelic-folk chanteuse par excellence.
Her debut 7”, Another Version Of Pop Song, the title, a reference to her girl-group past and the song itself a declaration of breaking these ties, received praise from many quarters. Second single, Start/Stop/Synchro raised the ante further with publications such as the NME, Pitchfork, The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Under The Radar bringing the plaudits.

"Imagine Siouxsie if she was less intimidatingly imperious, a more grounded Liz Fraser singing with the Smiths or Duffy with all the sweat and grit wiped away by Stereolab. She could probably sing the news and rob you of your breath" The Guardian 'New Band Of The Day'
"Like all the best British pop music, it’s smart, mournful and quite breathtaking." NME '10 Tracks You Have To Hear'

    PAPER AEROPLANES

Formally part of Cardiff-based band Halflight, Richard Llewellyn and Sarah Howells from Cerdigion and Pembrokeshire respectively make music that has been compared to Suzanne Vega, The Sundays, Amy Mcdonald and The Cranberries. At the end of 2008 they joined forces with the Autonomy Music Group. In January 2009 they worked with John Reynolds (Sinead O'Conner, Andrea Corr) on two singles that will be taken from their album "The day we ran into the sea", which will be released in either 2009 or 2010.

"Reminiscent of the fragile moments of Garbage, perhaps - the howl and pain of Shirley Manson replaced by equally entrancing Sarah Howells' delicate emotion." Thisisfakediy.com

BAREFOOT DANCE OF THE SEA (pka BETH & BEC from The Hot Puppies)
Bec and Beth EP Purr Records 7”

    Article written by Ged M
    Aug 2, 2008.
‘Bec and Beth’ sounds like a schoolbook graffito or a best friends’ declaration scraped into the top of a school desk. The “best friends” part is certainly right; this is Becky Wood (neé Newman) and Beth Gibson from The Hot Puppies, using time off from touring to work together on an EP of minimalist soul-baring torch songs, in this case three covers and one original. Just as the Hot Puppies have moved away from indiepop, Bec and Beth are exploring their own eclectic influences.

Becky Wood could always sing: we know that from the Hot Puppies, but ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ shows that she has the English rose of voices, delicate but ultra-strong. Beth’s piano backing is stripped back and skeletal, the better to reveal the pulsing, bruised heart at the centre of the song. “Achingly pretty” is the only way to describe their version of the Smiths’ ‘Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me’ while their self-penned ‘French Song’ splices romance and heartbreak. They round off their record with a cover of ‘I’m Making Believe’ from the 1944 film Sweet and Low-Down, sung with a fervent longing that evokes the vocal groups of the 40s and 50s (or a Dennis Potter soundtrack). It’s a record full of blushing charm and with all the thrill of the unrequited crush, the voices so good they’d shine in the company of much lauded divas like Duffy and Adele."Soundssxp

    James Tyson
Chapter's Theatre Director and singer songwriter James has supported PeppermintPatti from when it was a twinkle in our eyes. His new album "the Lights that go Brighter at Dusk" is a mixture of his own work and 16 songs that he's written the music for from poetry by Malcolm Lowry.

"Lyrical and moving - reminds me of John Cale and Van Dyke Parks... very good and deservedly lofty comparisons." Adam Walton

    NEXT DOOR IN THE THEATRE:

    THE VICTORIAN ENGLISH GENTLEMENS CLUB
The Victorian English Gentlemens Club are guitars basses drums and lungs in Cardiff. They will freely describe their music as Pop although they sometimes play songs without a chorus. It has also been described as Rock, although they have been known to use an acoustic guitar, and Punk, despite their enjoyment of effects pedals and natural fibres. They have just completed recording their second album which be in your dirty fingers very soon. They are all pleased to meet you.

"Substituting euphemistic nouns in order to talk about your genitals over the airwaves – if it’s good enough for Jack White and his doorbell, it’s good enough for too-long-absent Cardiff clangers VEGC. “Make my parrot talk”, demands Adam Taylor, “…it hasn’t said a word for the past few days”. Ladies beware: this is NOT an innocent request for sunflower seeds. Fitting in perfectly with the gothic aesthetic of the moment with clanking bass and skeleton-shuffling percussion, it’s like Royal Trux being chased down a dark alley by a zombie Blood Red Shoes." EMILY BREEZE
Emily Breeze comes on like Elvis,Nick cave and Patti Smith playing a baptist preacher rolled in to one,her striking bequiffed persona rocks, swaggers and plays holy southern hell out of a beutifull white guitar.Later on she plays songs of love and failure and the crowd gos silent. Then she cranks the neck of her guitar ,the bassist bows and the set shifts a gear into a swirling rock n roll climax.

there was more sweat and energy in this rock n roll show than a hundred simpering indie boy bands. thank god there are bands as good as this." ARTROCKER

    WET DOG
    ARTROCKER SINGLE OF THE WEEK
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: WETDOG / ALIBI (ANGULAR)
It’s Deranged, it’s squelchy, it’s post-punkin’ – and thanks to these ladies, it’s single of the week. This features a nice selection of doom-laden bass, off-kilter guitars loops and some half-jabbered lyrics.

Judging from this murky ditty, you’d believe any word that came out of their mouths -possibly through fear and sheer intimidation. If only all bands rattled like this.

    KING ALEXANDER
If we had a house band KA would be it.

"The three piece Noise Core outfit cancel more gigs than they play. They sell more CD’s than they make."
